Bedroom and Bedding Measurement Guide

How to measure mattresses, pillows, windows, furniture and walking clearances in centimetres or inches.

Measure the mattress itself

  1. Remove bedding that hides the edges.
  2. Measure width across the widest usable surface.
  3. Measure length from head to foot.
  4. Measure depth from the bottom seam to the highest point, including any topper that will remain.
  5. Repeat at more than one place if the mattress is rounded or uneven.

Measure for fitted sheets

Compare stated pocket depth with the mattress plus topper and protector. A little allowance may be useful, but an excessively deep sheet can bunch.

Measure a pillow

Record width and length along the seams. For loft, note both uncompressed and settled height; the settled number is more relevant to comfort.

Measure windows and light gaps

Measure the full frame, trim, mounting area and distance to nearby furniture. Account for overlap above, below and beside the glass.

Measure movement space

Open the door, wardrobe and drawers. Measure the narrowest walking route and the access needed to change sheets.

Write units beside every number

A bare “60” can mean centimetres or inches. Record units on paper, screenshots and shopping notes.
